A Personal Narrative Journey with Instructor, Wendy Byard

There is something magical - and a bit scary - about turning the spotlight inward and weaving the tapestry of our own experiences. This is precisely what I embarked on during my time in Wendy Byard's Narrative Essay class offered at The Giving Tree Collective Enrichment Studio. It was a journey through the corridors of self-discovery, storytelling, and empowerment - with a heavy dose of connection and joy.

The Classroom Chronicles

The moment I stepped into Wendy Byard's Narrative Essay class, I knew I was in for an adventure. The class was small, intimate, and filled with eager writers, but there was one thing that made it truly unique – the presence of four other incredible women, each with their own unique life stories to tell. We were a small group, united by the desire to put our experiences into words.

Wendy Byard: The Captain of Our Literary Ship

Wendy Byard, our fearless leader and guide, was the head of our literary voyage together. With a wealth of knowledge, an inspiring personality and a passion for writing and storytelling, she effortlessly navigated us through the waters of personal essay writing. Wendy's expertise extended beyond just writing skill; she had the rare ability to nurture creativity and inspire confidence in us all. Her energetic teaching style kept us engaged and excited for each new step of the writing process.

Discovering the Art of Personal Narrative

One of the most valuable lessons I learned in Wendy's class was the art of turning everyday experiences into captivating narratives. It is a writing style I have never explored, but wanted to learn in preparation for writing my own memoir. We delved into the depths of our memories, mining for those significant moments that we often overlook. Wendy taught us to see the extraordinary in the ordinary, encouraging us to transform everyday moments into gold on paper.

I chose to write about the last moments I spent with my beloved neighbor, Bill, as he was passing away from cancer. I was struggling with a topic, until, after spending that time with him. I was inspired to share my personal experience of that last meeting and everything just flowed out of me. It was deeply healing on so many levels - something I never anticipated happening as part of this class.

On the day of Bill’s memorial, I shared my essay with his son - a story of how much his dad was loved by our family and will forever be in our hearts.

Sharing Stories, Sharing Empowerment

One of the most beautiful aspects of the class was the sense of community that blossomed among us. As we shared our personal essays, we not only revealed our stories but also our vulnerabilities. It was a space where we felt empowered to lay our hearts bare on paper, knowing that we were in the company of those who understood the power of words. There were lots of laughs and lots of tears. It was a true magical alchemy that we created.

The Power of a Group

By the end of the 5-session class, the other four women in the class were not just fellow students; they were inspirations. Each had a unique voice and perspective that enriched our collective experience. We celebrated each other, knowing that our stories were gifts waiting to be opened and heard.

Serious Fun: The Secret Ingredient

Wendy managed to strike the perfect balance between seriousness and fun. She encouraged us to take our writing seriously but also reminded us that creativity thrives in an atmosphere of joy and playfulness. Writing was no longer a task; it became an empowering journey for each of us, all in very different ways.

Empowered to Share

By the end of the class, we had all unearthed stories that were hidden deep within us. Wendy had empowered us to not only write them but also to share them with the world. There's a certain magic in knowing that words have the power to connect with others, to resonate with their experiences, and perhaps even inspire them.

Reflections

As I reflect on my time in Wendy’s class, I can't help but feel grateful. I've learned invaluable tips and techniques for crafting personal essays, but more importantly, I've learned the power of storytelling as a means of self-discovery and connection.

So, to Wendy and my fellow classmates, thank you for such a wonderful experience!

If you like to write or feel called to take this class when it is offered - DO IT!!! You will absolutely love it!

Narratives we create are not just stories on paper; they are pieces of our souls that we offer to the world. Share your story with us.

xoxo,

Camille
